Opalsøen is also a place where you can test your limits in different ways. It is a lake with lots of opportunities for family and people who are more adventurous. jumping 8 meters into the lake is one of the most popular attractions and if the water is not your thing, you can abseil down the 30-meter high steep wall. While the adrenaline is pumping through your blood, you can enjoy the beautiful calm landscape from the top.

Our trip through Bornholm

On the first day on the island of Bornholm, we went for a long walk along the coast of Bornholm. There are many good trails along with beautiful natural areas. On the way, we saw rocks and mountains that you would not think were to be found on Danish soil. We eventually reached a steep staircase, which led to the “hammershus,” which is northern Europe’s largest castle ruin. Hammershus exudes history and is estimated to be from the 13th century.

Here it is possible to get a guided tour around the ruin with costumed guides providing vivid tales of “hammershus” history. However, it is exciting to walk around and experience the historic building on your own. Everyone has the opportunity to understand the history of “hammershus,” as all signs are written in multiple languages, including a lingua franca language, so it makes it easier for tourists to get something out of the signs.

If one is not so much for the historical aspect of “hammershus,” it is a beautiful place worth visiting anyway. After a walk around the ruins, it is possible to walk along a path that leads on to the new visitor center, which stands in stark contrast to the “hammerhus” with its modern architecture. Here it is possible to get more knowledge about “hammershus” through the exhibition, which expands on the stories from hammershus. Here is also where one can enjoy something to drink or ice cream, as many of us did, after a long walk or just a long day of walking by “hammerhus.”

We also visited Denmark’s only mountain town, called Gudhjem, which means home of God in Danish. The city has also given its name to a traditional Bornholm eatery, namely “Sol over Gudhjem”, which is a piece of rye bread with a smoked herring and an egg yolk on top. Gudhjem is known for its smoked herring, which was supposed to be extremely tasty. Of course, we had to experience that too, and therefore, we went to Gudhjem smokehouse, and even though not everyone dared to try their hand at the traditional Bornholm dish, it was definitely worth a visit. Afterwards, we walked around the god home, which has a lot to offer. The small streets are filled with small shops and cafes. We even heard live music at the harbor. Gudhjem is also known for the “Krølle-Bølle” ice cream, which is very large and almost too big to be able to eat. The ice is named after Bornholm’s national troll, which was created during World War II and characterized many of Bornholm’s souvenirs. The ice cream was unfortunately sold out when we decided to go down to the ice cream shop, but it was probably not so bad anyway, as it probably fits better for a summer day on Bornholm with high sun, as they are most.

An adventurous day!

On the second day, it was time to experience the more crazy side of Bornholm. That means abseiling, jumping from rocks, and just generally being high above our ground. We had to abseil down a cliff that was 30 meters high. scary! but it was really cool. We were led through by professional instructors. We did not feel insecure at any point, but that changed when we stood with our toes over the cliff.

The adrenaline pumped through the body, but it felt good. Time passed and most came down the cliff. We were so happy and proud of ourselves because some of us had overcome our fears and some of us pushed our boundaries.
